Carol Schram: Alex Newhook a potential Canucks draft target + Edler negotiations stalled A tale of two Alexes: veteran blueliner Alex Edler is having a tough time getting a new deal done with the Vancouver Canucks, while Victoria Grizzlies centre Alex Newhook appears to be a player of interest for Vancouver at the draft.

Edler can take his NMC and shove it up his ass.

Good bye.

Thanks Carol.

Do you have any favourite for who you would like the Canucks to draft?

I agree Edler is walking if he wants a NTC.

You think Newhook is a perimeter player?

Yes.

I will clarify a bit. I do think he is a better play maker than a goal scorer. Generally good goal scorers are more willing to get to the centre.

Playing the perimeter is fine, he's got lots of skill to do so. He would most certainly be an upgrade on Van's current perimeter players.

At the same time, I think Van has less goal scorers then play makers and I'd rather someone who is a bit more in between the two types. Like Boldy or McMichael or Podkolzin.

I have no idea, yet.

I've agreed to take part in Jan Levine's mock draft, so that'll be when the rubber meets the road for me....

I saw you were picking for Van. Is there any way we can persuade you to pick a certain player?

You can certainly try!

I will be soliciting as much input as possible as we start to see how the picks shake down.

Apparently trades are also possible. I've noticed that a few of you would like to see the Canucks trade down, so that may be something I'll look into, too...

Trade down pick McMichael, he's my 8th favourite player in this draft. Add another London Knight

Thanks Carol, did you catch Newhook on the radio this morning? I’m just listening now.

Almost no way I’d trade down in the first. Mid 1st to mid 2nd are too interchangeable to be giving quality & receiving risk. It’d have to be a major haul.

On goal scorers i break it down to snipers & finishers. Eg Brock & EP would be snipers & Bo a finisher. With more playmakers which we lack a great deal i’d say more finishing would happen. Opportunists tend to rise from anywhere if someone drives the play where we only have EP. Add to that our D isn’t good at creating offence which stymies scoring greatly. Hughes will change this but another D would create more depth & balance for overall gains. Panarin is an immediate injection of flow & playmaking. EK on D would also be just that but he’s not getting much luv here & probably has priced himself out if here given ppl’s views. Given we are short on playmakers the opportunists are not as apparent.

I wouldn't mark EP40 as a sniper, he can shoot for sure but I'd say he's equal parts shooter and playmaker

For those prospect hounds, what are your best/worst case scenarios for #10. I mean, barring something stupid, like Hughes slipping to 10, or Benning selecting Gunnarsson (again) with his 1st round pick.

I gave EP both attributes. His one timer gave him sniper skills.

For me: Worst case scenario is Newhook which is a pretty (frank)ing awesome worst case scenario. Best case - one of Zegras, Dach or Boldy fall to us

EDIT*** I was being too positive - only considering players I like... Actual worst worst worst case scenario is passing on any of those guys for Cozens/Caufield/Broberg/Soderstrom.

I have a feeling you do not live on the island and have never seen him play. Correct? Scores 90% of his goals 2-5 feet out dead center.
